The church of St Mary and St Ethelburga is situated in Lyminge, a village rich with Anglo-Saxon history in Kent, England. The building and surrounding churchyard have seen many changes over the years and boast their own intriguing history, but have also been hiding the remains of a 7th-century church for almost 90 years. As part of the ‘Pathways to the Past: Exploring the Legacy of Ethelburga’ project, Lyminge Parish Church Council joined forces with the University of Reading and Topcon Positioning GB to explore the heritage of the site using modern-day technology.

TheTopcon GTL-1000has all the features of a robotic total station, combined with a fully functional laser scanner, equipping the user with the ability to use and establish a survey control network, as well as register point cloud data with one tool. With just three clicks and in less than two minutes, the new GTL-1000 can produce a complete, 360-degree, locally-registered point cloud of an area.

Unpicking the building’s constructional history

The laser scans allowed the team to unpick the building’s constructional history in detail.

Dr Gabor concluded: “This is one of the longest continually-occupied sites of Christianity in England, with the extant remains from one of the very earliest stone churches of the Anglo-Saxon period. Now, thanks to Topcon and the surveying done as part of this project, it is also one of the most accurately recorded medieval churches in southern England.”
